Long time lurker, first time poster. This happened a few hours ago (I think?). Obligatory English isn't my first language.I'm currently studying abroad, and I've been in this new country for almost a month now. I've met many new people, we have sort of formed a group and we hang out together (taking in mind the covid restrictions of this country). Today (technically yesterday?) we decided to go out for drinks. We very much fucked up our system up, like university students usually do. I won't say exactly what I drank, but it was probably 2 different drinks and 3 or 4 different shots. I'm not the most tolerant drinker in the world, so yes I did get drunk. We left the bar because it was closing time, and decided to hang out on a public place. And now I think it is time to mention something about me.I do not know how to ride a bike. Not without helping wheels at least. I didn't have space in my parents apartment when I was a kid, so I never really used it or even needed it. I tried to learn as a teen/adult, but failed miserably. One time I did ride for a few seconds but I didn't practice again ever since. I've always felt like I'm missing out, and coming to a city with plenty of bike lanes only fueled my desire to finally become a normal person.Cue to a few hours ago. A guy in our group has rented a bike. Someone mentions I don't know how to ride, and the rest of my drunk people decide I should try riding. Going downhill. I said no, because apparently I had just enough clarity to know I probably would not balance while going downhill. This type of clarity kind of faded away as the night went on.Eventually we got on a public square and practice started. I kept going sideways and they kept trying to keep me up. One of the gals in the group was trying harder than most. After quite a while, she was the only one who had stayed behind and gave me tips to balance myself, and even held me when I tried to ride. And it worked! I did it! For a few seconds, but drunk me is a persistent bitch. I kept trying and I did small talk with my friend while she kept giving me advice. But there was a problem.. I didn't really manage to turn the bike without losing balance. I stopped and did it again and again, but drunk me could only either ride on a straight line, or just fall sideways. At some point we went on an part of the square where palm trees are planted. I thought it would be a good idea to try and swerve between the palm trees. I had gotten quite the hang of it and I was trying to comprehend what I was doing. Riding a bike. While drunk. The realisation of what a stupid thing that was started to dawn on me... When a palm tree decided to also dawn on my face while I was going full speed. Milliseconds before the impact I had decided it was an ok time to die and didn't even think to brake. I just turned my head sideways and hoped I wouldn't break my neck.It was not good. My head hurt, my neck hurt and I wasn't sure if I had fallen or if was still standing. I saw my friend running over to me and asking me if I was okay, I remember saying I wasn't. Don't remember much after that. We probably stopped and got back to our friends, who told me I have a scar on my face and were worried about my wellbeing (they didn't see the crash). I started to feel better and the rest of the night was pretty good. I did try riding again an hour later, while pretty much sober. Still couldn't turn the bike, but at least my head wasn't spinning anymore.I'm home now, cleaned the scar with alcohol and tomorrow I'll check the stores for something that can help my skin forget about the slap in my face. Next lesson will be on an empty lot without any trees. And definitely fully sober.TL;DR : got drunk, agreed to learn how to ride a bike, rode the bike, and drunk me decided to do a literal facepalm while at it. Sober me is proud, confused, disappointed and regretful. via /r/tifu https://ift.tt/34M0hxX
