LPT: Use bubbly soda or pineapple juice if you are choking on stuck food in your esophagus.

A few years ago we were blessed with an amazing journey. Our youngest was born with trachealesophageal fistula and esophageal astresia. A "common rare" birth defect. He is prone to choking, daily. Reading about a TIFU about a baby choking inspired me to share this info with all.One piece of advice that has saved our little too many times to count is when he has had something stuck drinking some gingerale or clear soda or pineapple juice has 99% of the time unlodged whatever was stuck. (And just bc this is reddit and I feel I need to add this- this soda trick is one step in our trained process to remove a stuckie, if this doesn't work we do the heimlich, when that hasn't worked we have called emergency services).Sometimes the drinks push it down but most of the time just makes him throw up. I could care less as long as it's out. To be honest I'm not 100% sure why this works, but it does. I assume the carbonation in the soda helps move things around a bit, and possibly something with the acidity of pineapple juice. If someone has the answer I'd love to read it!This trick is not limited to kids with birth defects!Almost every body has choked before!!This trick is great for new parents teaching their babies how to eat "real" food. I have used it once on myself after learning about it. An old friend from highschool shared this information with her MIL, who had frequent food stuck episodes during dinners and it has helped take the stress off when she eats. I have had a handful of friends and clients share with me that they remembered me sharing this info and it has helped them somehow. Please share with any of your friends or family who might have swallowing issues. We always have a can of something accessible.I hope this trick helps someone! Even if it's just one person. Stay well everyone!!Also quick to add, and only because my father passed from esophageal cancer- choking often as an adult can also be a sign of esophageal cancer. Obviously mention your problems to your doctor as soda and pineapple juice does not cure cancer. An extra LPT that honestly if we'd known what to look for I wonder if we could have had an "easier" outcome with some sort of notice with my Pops.TD;LR Drink bubbly soda or pinapple juice when choking or if your child is choking give it to them. Also bonus LPT choking can be an early sign of esophageal cancer in adults. via /r/LifeProTips https://ift.tt/30erXdk
