I forget the exact date, but in 2012 my house was burglarized. I was 13 years old at the time.On a typical Wednesday, my family and I came home to find a shattered sliding-glass door and all of our valuable belongings missing. They took everything. Both of our T.Vs, my Xbox, my iPod Touch, ~$400 worth of change that my family spent countless nights rolling, and worst of all... My mother’s jewelry. My mother isn’t a very materialistic person. She doesn’t need expensive things to be happy. The monetary value of her jewelry was minuscule compared to the rest of the stuff stolen. It was the sentimental value of that jewelry that she cherished. This jewelry was passed down from family members and represented milestones within her life. The disappearance of this brought her to tears for days at a time.“Detectives” showed up to the house and no evidence was ever retrieved on who might have committed this crime. It was clear that whoever preformed this burglary was experienced in the craft and knew exactly what they were doing.Life went on as normal for us. We never heard anything else about who might have done this. I pushed the whole ordeal into the back of my mind. This was until I got some “bad” news around a year later....My former Youth Football Teammate, who we will call Carlos, was arrested and charged with multiple accounts of robbery.Carlos was a freak of nature. At age 13 he was 6 feet tall and 195 lbs. He scored nearly every time he touched the football. He grew up in the deep ghetto of our city. He was raised by a young-single mother and his dad was in and out of prison. No wonder he was a giant. He had to be big in order to survive in that environment. My family realized this and wanted to do everything we could to help the kid. We frequently gave him rides to and from practices and even helped his mother with the payments for joining the youth football league. You could tell he was from a rough background but he was polite, had a charming personality, and we shared football as a common interest. Me and my family didn’t think twice about him(All of the following events happened maybe 6 months before the burglary)One Friday night after our football practice, Carlos asked my dad if he could take him to a High School football game instead of going home.He also gave the request of stopping by my house to meet my mom. I thought this was a little weird but it was nice that he wanted to finally meet my mother; considering everything she did for him behind the scenes.Little did I know that this was going to be the first red flagAs he entered my house I told him that my mother is in the kitchen straight ahead. Instead of going to the kitchen, he walked into my mother room and looked around as if he was trying to find something but didn’t want to make it obvious. I thought this was a little weird but didn’t think much of it. I just said something along the lines of “she’s not in there, she’s in the kitchen over here” and after a few moments of looking around he went to the kitchen to meet my mom.My mother gave the standard “you are welcome here anytime and nice to meet you” speech and we went on our way.A couple weeks later we just finished winning one of our youth football games. Carlos had 3 girls his age that came to the game to see him play. He was talking to these girls after the game. As I was leaving to go home, Carlos interrupted one of the girls mid sentence and looked at me and said “I want to go over to y’alls house”Again, I thought this was a little weird to invite yourself over to somebody’s house. Also, why would he want to come to my house? He has 3 girls his age swarming him and all he wants to do is come over to my house??? I definitely thought this was a little weird but I didn’t think much of it because I had no reason to suspect anything else.I asked my dad if Carlos could come over and he obliged. My dad bought us lunch and we headed to my house. The night mostly consisted of playing NCAA 10 on Xbox360, getting friendly with my dogs, and hanging out. It was just a normal night. It got late so we decided to have a sleepover. In the morning we were about to exit the house to play basketball in my driveway. This was until the security system caught Carlos’s eye. The next few minutes consisted of him asking me about my home security system and me explaining to him that we don’t use it anymore because it is broken.I didn’t think twice about sharing this information with him. We were friends and I thought we were just making friendly conversation.... obviously, this is another red flag that I did not see.And of course..... months later my house was robbed. There was a blatant disregard for the signs outside our house stating that we had a home security system.... Almost as if they knew it didn’t workA blatant disregard for the howling 100lbs dog upstairs... almost as if they knew she was friendly. And the detectives said that the intruders were in and out of the house within a few minutes. They knew exactly what they were doing.... almost as if they knew where everything was already located...I didn’t put 2 and 2 together until years after Carlos and some of his friends were arrested for burglaries.I am 100% sure it was him. I’ve never been more sure about anything in my life... and I’ve never told anybody about this.He is the worst person I’ve ever met and I hate his guts. He pretended to be my friend to rob my house and he used my parents for his benefit. My parents still haven’t connected the two. I can’t bring myself to explain this to my mother. Telling her that he’s the reason she cried for days on end and how I let that monster in our house. He was let out of Juvy years later but got right back in jail for aggravated assault with a firearm. He will be in jail for the majority of his life on this charge.I hope that one day he owns up to his wrongdoings and becomes a good person....I really do hope he gets better... but that doesn’t change what I’d want to do to him if I ever see him agin via /r/TrueOffMyChest https://ift.tt/370FM39
