As a healthcare professional who's worked in several sectors I've been frequently frustrated and annoyed at the level of people popping out kids in terrible circumstances or in situations where it's inevitable the kids will go into care.I remember one patient who had no less than 10 children removed from her!I also have seen kids in awful situations with awful parents/carers.I think it's generally understood the care systems are equally rubbish. They're not necessarily a place for good care and growth of children into healthy adults without their own issues (not saying everyone who is in care ends up dysfunctional in someway but, just that in my experience, these places suck in their job to bring safety and security to vulnerable youth).I was reviewing some posts on here and they all seem quite pessimistic. From a public/global health perspective I think we could benefit from fewer births worldwide due to the damage our numbers are doing to the planet and each other. But is not having babies the full answer?I wish we had better systems in place to support people in terrible circumstances. Better wages for low earners, more access to healthcare and autonomy for women (including access to abortion and contraception services). Better care service etc etc.I would love to be able to adopt (when I'm in a responsible position to offer safety and security to a kid or teen). But I also get really angry at the fact I'm trying to be responsible and think about being in a position to offer a kid the best chance in life when there's so many others out there giving birth without a second thought to the kids life. That woman who had 10 children removed constantly sticks in my mind. As a "developed" country it's not ethical to take away her ability to procreate. But at the same time who says it's ethical for her to have forced a (potentially) terrible life on 10 other beings?!This person in question had issues of her own which likely affected her ability to make these kinds of decisions but equally she also had free access to contraception and abortion services so I also think she acted selfishly.I think I'm venting maybe rather than making a coherent point but I'm not sure just not having babies is the answer(??). The social systems in place generally disproportionately affect those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Especially if you come from an uneducated background or one where there's pressure to have children (regardless of real world factors). But then rich people could be equally poor parents, yet it has to be said, would be less likely to have their kids go without the essentials.I think it boils down to the fact I don't trust the general populace to make non-selfish, good decisions about not having babies (hello track record of all history) but I also don't like the idea of a state dictating how/when/if you could breed as that can be a slippery slope to eugenics type issues. So what's the answer? via /r/antinatalism https://ift.tt/3oaVe2X
